About Tavern On The Hill

Tavern on the Hill is co-owned by Jim Cooper and his son in law Lawrence Guyette. Both men have been in the restaurant business most of their adult lives. Jim has worked as a wholesale fish supplier for over 30 years. Larry has worked in the restaurant business for over 20 years, starting as a dishwasher and eventually working his way up to chef at one of the valleys premier dining establishments. Larry was named Chef of the Year by the Massachusetts Restaurant Association in 1999.

As natives of the Pioneer Valley both men were familiar with the restaurant that used to occupy the building now known as Tavern on the Hill. The location had been home to the Harvest Valley for many years. On more than one occasion Larry and Jim would talk about starting their own restaurant, and both agreed that Harvest Valley would be their dream location.

One day Jim got a phone call from one of his old accounts, the owner of Harvest Valley, who was interested in selling the place and wondered if Jim would be interested in buying it. The guys decided it would be just the opportunity they were waiting for. Jim and Larry became proud owners of the establishment on April 27, 2005. With a shoestring budget they began the arduous task of renovating the old building. The two men, along with friends and family did virtually all the work themselves, from building the table tops in the basement of Larry’s home to milling the wainscoting that adorns the dinning room.

Their hard work paid off on June 22, 2005 when they handed in their saws and hammers for pots and pans and opened the door to rave reviews.

In 2013 the Tavern family lost one of it's founding partners when Jim Cooper passed away suddenly.  Jim left his indelible mark on the Tavern and will forever be in out hearts.
